The Hot in July Halter

The challenge was to use the colors red, white or blue.  You could use them all or just one.  I found this cotton polyester blend at the Supercenter.  It's a good place to go for cheap fabric.  I've wanted to make something that was polka dot for a long time.  Polka dots are so fun!

I downloaded the pattern from BurdaStyle.com .  I had always been a little intimidated by their patterns because you have to download them on paper, put it together like a puzzle and add seam allowances.  For a beginner like me, it was a little scary.  But let me tell you, they have very fashionable patterns.

Another thing about Burda patterns, they are not made for curvy chicks, like me.  I don't know how to upsize a pattern yet.  The only alterations I can do are to shorten, lengthen and add side vents, as I did for this top.  Darn those hips of mine.

It was fun to make and fun to wear.  I wore it on a date with Mr. Cool (formerly known on this blog as The Hub).  It was perfect for the hot weather that we're having and I will absolutely be wearing it again.

Thanks Sew Weekly  for the inspiration.

Sew ya later, alligator.

  2. It looks very cute. I was about to ask you how you find tracing from the Burda mag being a beginner but you confirmed you had downloaded. Am looking forward to the August edition, Since May I have not liked subsequent editions but August looks fab.

    1. Tracing, that is the main reason that keeps me from subscribing to the magazine, aside from the fact that it is $90 from the US. it's not sold in the stores here in MI, at least I have not seen it. Thanks for your thoughts on the magazine Sassy T.

    1. Thank You. I had the red and the white covered, the blue was the last element I needed.

  4. Hi,

I saw your gorgeous top on Burdastyle.com and it inspired me. I had a piece of red fabric in my stash, so I downloaded the pattern. Now I wonder if the back isn't too low and will show the backpiece of my bra? Did you make any alterations in the back? The top line of the pattern is round - on your photos the line looks pretty straight... Maybe this is how it comes out after I fix the elastic?

    Any help appreciated :-)

    1. Hi Kathy. I did not make any alteration. I was worried about that as well, but I think the elastic takes care of that. When I wore it I did not have to adjust at all, I kept checking out of habit. Good Luck.
